Veratraldehyde, also known as 3,4-Dimethoxybenzaldehyde, is an organic compound with a white needles or chunky light peach powder appearance, a sweet woody fragrance, and a strong vanilla like sweet taste. It is not only an important fragrance, widely used as a flavorant and odorant, but also an important pharmaceutical intermediate, used in the synthesis of some pharmaceutical drugs including amiquinsin, hoquizil, piquizil, prazosin, quinazoline, tiapamil, toborinone, verazide, and vetrabutine.

Properties of  Veratraldehyde

3,4-Dimethoxybenzaldehyde is white needles or chunky light peach powder, with a sweet woody fragrance, and a strong vanilla like sweet taste. It is a derivative of vanillin, and its natural form exist in Java lemongrass oil and coriander oil. Veratraldehyde barely soluble in cold water, but can be dissolved in hot water, ethanol and oils.

Applications of Veratraldehyde

3,4-Dimethoxybenzaldehyde is widely used as a flavorant and odorant because of its pleasant woody fragrance, it is an excellent perfume material with more warmth and depth than Vanillin.

Veratraldehyde is an important pharmaceutical intermediate, which can be used to synthesize blood pressure lowering drugs such as prazosin hydrochloride, antiarrhythmic drug resveratrol, anti-inflammatory and anti asthma drug flutamide, as well as carbidopa, veraniazid, etc.

Veratraldehyde has a role as an antifungal agent, so it also used in the production of animal medicine sulfonamide enhancer Difungin.
