N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone, also known as 1-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone and N-Methylpyrrolidone, is an organic compound consisting of a 5-membered lactam, and belongs to nitrogen heterocycle family, with appearance of colorless transparent oily liquid and slight amine odor. It is a polar non proton transfer solvent with advantages of low toxicity, high boiling point, excellent solubility, strong selectivity and good stability. N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone is an aprotic solvent which is widely used in fields such as chemical engineering, resin plastics, coatings, inks, dyes, pesticides, lithium-ion batteries, electronics, etc.
Properties of N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone
1-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone is a colorless to light yellow transparent liquid with a slight ammonia odor. It is easily miscible with water in any proportion and almost completely mixed with all solvents such as ether, acetone, esters, halogenated hydrocarbons, aromatics, etc.
N-Methylpyrrolidone has stable chemical properties, and is not corrosive to carbon steel and aluminum, but slightly corrosive to copper. It has the advantages of low viscosity, good chemical and thermal stability, high polarity, low volatility, and infinite compatibility with water and many organic solvents.
With other physical properties as below:
Melting point: −24 °C(lit.)
Boiling point: 202.0±0.0 °C at 760 mmHg
Flash Point: 86.1±0.0 °C
Applications of N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone
Because of its advantages of low toxicity, high boiling point, outstanding solubility, strong selectivity, and good stability, N-Methylpyrrolidone is widely used in fields such as petrochemicals, pesticides, pharmaceuticals, electronic materials, etc.
N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone with a industrial grade (purity≥99.50%), can be used in refining of lubricating oil, making electronic insulation materials, agricultural herbicides, pesticide additives. Or used as lubricating oil antifreeze or in PVC exhaust gas recovery as it can help synthetic gas desulfurization; Due to its high solubility in resins, 1-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone can also be used as a solvent for resin processing, specifically in the manufacturing of coatings, floor paints, varnish, composite coating film-forming, integrated circuit enameled wire insulation materials, fiber fabrics, adhesives, and other products.
N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone with a normal grade (purity≥99.80%), can be used as aromatic hydrocarbon extractant, such as acetylene concentration and extraction of butadiene, isoprene, aromatics, etc. For example, it is used as a solvent for recovering acetylene from natural gas or light naphtha pyrolysis gas, with a purity of 99.7% for concentrated acetylene recovery.
N-Methyl-2-Pyrrolidone with a reagent grade (purity≥99.85%), can be used in industries that require strict control over metal ions and particles, such as integrated circuits and hard drives, for degreasing, dewaxing, polishing, rust prevention, and paint removal. For example, N-Methylpyrrolidone is often used as removal solution for photoresist, or washing solution for precision instruments in the IC semiconductor industry, LCD liquid crystal materials, PCB printed circuit boards, and hard drives, or it is used as production solvents for the pharmaceutical industry, such as artificial kidney function membrane fluid and seawater desalination membrane fluid.
